Creative services directors in local television mostly toil away in anonymity. No one is asking for our autographed picture or a selfie with us at any community event, like they might with the on-air talent.
But when a latenight talk show host mentions you by name on national TV, that’s a big deal.
And so it was for Robby Thomas, WNCN’s creative services director in Raleigh when Seth Myers gave him a shout-out on his NBC show, Late Night with Seth Meyers.
When Myers was on a publicity tour, Thomas gave Meyers a WNCN coffee mug as a thank you gift and mentioned that he should consider putting it on his desk, and get mugs from other NBC stations around the country to build loyalty in each community for the show.
And a few weeks later, Meyers revealed the idea to a national audience.
Thomas says he wasn’t watching at the time, but got tweets and DVR-ed it. When he told his mom about it, she said, “if I had known, I would have stayed up.”
