A couple weeks ago, I wrote about how KWCH Wichita, Kan., found a way to promote some May sweeps stories in its social media.
Yesterday I wrote about how KWCH came up with a terrific visual to promote a story that had no video, but amazing statistics.
Today, how KWCH uses Facebook to augment its own on-air to promote its May sweeps stories.
Remember Baby Jessy? The little boy trapped underground in a space the size of a soccer ball. The rescue 15 years ago grabbed the attention of the nation. Now the station wanted to revisit the story. Here’s KWCH’s Creative Services Director Stephanie Huff:
“We had amazing video from the actual rescue (back when news photographers were allowed to get right up to the scene) so it was obvious we needed to use that as our focus.”

“The soundbites of the rescuer were so amazing that we created two ‘digital extras’ with his sound. These digital extras are made primarily for Facebook, but also shared on Twitter (via YouTube link). We strategically schedule these to air a day or two in advance of the story so to give our Facebook fans time to watch and share with their friends. This digital extra video on the Baby Jessy story had a reach over 55K with nearly 700 Likes and 100 Shares.”

Here’s the special report, Baby Jessy: 15 Years after the Well, that aired on Mother’s Day.
If it appears as if KWCH is monopolizing the May sweeps spots segments, it’s because they are kind enough and confident enough to share their great work. What about you? Don’t forget to send me your May sweeps spots. Here’s what I need—a YouTube or Vimeo link to any examples you want to share, along with a short explanation about it if you want. I can also do links to work on your web site.
For competitive reasons, it might be best to submit only those promos that are already on your air. Make sure you get the permission of station management.
My e-mail and phone number are at the top of the column.
