Devlin Design Group won the PromaxBDA Gold Award for Set Design for the HD set it created for KSAZ, the Fox O&O in Phoenix. The award was announced at the PromaxBDA Station Summit Local Awards luncheon last week in Las Vegas.
“The Gold Award recognizes … creativity,” said Dan Devlin, DDG’s owner. “What we continue to do is … create innovative new approaches to scenic storytelling.”
The goal of the KSAZ set was to give it a unique design to differentiate it from KSAZ’s competition. The set has two mobile video kiosks, one of which includes a 65-inch monitor with touch-screen capabilities that news, weather and sports can use as an interactive tool for better story-telling.
The set area has backlit walls which can change color depending on the style and mood of each newscast.
Meanwhile WRAL, the CBS affiliate in Raleigh, unveiled its new set made entirely of sand.
“We’re in a beach state of mind,” said Steven D. Hammel, WRAL VP-GM. The beaches of North Carolina are about two hours from Raleigh. The set, which is outdoors, will be mainly used for weather.
“For all those viewers who can’t make it to the coast this summer,” said Hammel, “we thought we’d bring the sand to them.”
The weather desk is expected to last about a month.
The desk took six tons of sand and water to construct. WRAL had a local sand sculpture artist collaborate on the design. The carving of the sand sculpture took 50 man-hours to make. The desk features two 3-foot pelicans, a “Peli-prompter,” dolphins and a hidden shark.
