Paul,
I love the article on severe weather promos. It does give an all-around view of almost every type of weather promo. I think there’s one that’s missing though, and that’s the proof of performance promo (POP). Here’s one we did last year after a devastating tornado ripped through Indiana. People died, and you don’t POP death, so we made this one all about the people affected, and laid off of showing off our talent on camera. It was a 1:30 and we did make short :30 and :20 versions that had Red Cross information (at the end) for people to help the others affected by the weather event. Marketing Producer Pat Mathews gathered a ton of clips on Friday when it happened, and I picked sound bites/nat sound clips and put it all together with music on Saturday morning in 2012.
Just thought I’d share!

I wrote back to Will that I intended to showcase some severe weather POPs, but in the end decided not to. But I have written about severe weather coverage and how stations used their coverage as part of their respective marketing. I also got a note from John Kukla at KDFW, the Fox O&O in Dallas, about an old weather promo I used in the article. It’s so good, I’ll show it again.
Paul,
Yes, the great Jim Varney doing weather commercials for KDFW back in the mid-80s. Amazing how many folks still remember. As far as local weather, thank YOU again for the article on the WAPP back in September … we are now at 1.2 MILLION downloads! Here’s our latest ad…
