If your station had 30-seconds or more to air a message in the Super Bowl, what would it be?
Many NBC affiliates across the country had that chance when their stations carved out some time for a station promo during what turned out to be the most-watched Super Bowl in history.
If you’re an NBC affiliate and aired a specially-crafted promo during Sunday’s Super Bowl, share it with our readers. Send me an online link or a movie file I can post online.
Hearst-owned NBC affil WLWT Cincinnati used excerpts from what has been called one of the greatest speeches ever given, the one by Robert F. Kennedy from the bed of a pickup truck on April 4, 1968, the day Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, to create a moving message of unity.
“It’s not about who,” says Pete Salkowski, WLWT’s creative services director, “it’s about the message.”
Salkowski says his staff pitched the idea to him. He said he was struck by how timeless some issues are and thought hearing RFK’s words from 1968 would serve to remind viewers of the traditions that unite Cincinnati, a message that was consistent with the station’s branding message, The Cincinnati Way.
It seems to have resonated with the station’s Twitter followers.
Rebecca tweeted: Omg that commercial #TheCincinnatiWay man I love my city and home
Meredith tweeted: Great ad by WLWT. Proud to be from this great American city.
Here’s a version of WLWT’s The Cincinnati Way from 2014 followed by what the station aired in the Super Bowl. Below all that is the Kennedy speech.
