WINK, the CBS affiliate in Ft. Myers, Fla., owned by Ft. Myers Broadcasting, says it was able to find sex offenders with social media accounts that are unregistered.
Sex offenders and predators are allowed to have social media accounts in Florida, but must register them with their local sheriff’s office first.
“People use that to either con children, make first contact,” said Sgt. James Richard, who oversees the county’s sexual predator offender unit.
“It’s easier to be behind the screen and commit crimes, than it is to do that in person.”
