Earlier this week, a Market Share column reported that WPLG, Miami’s ABC affiliate owned by Berkshire Hathaway, had become the first U.S. TV station to be granted permission to base a fulltime news crew in Cuba.
“Cuba is local news in Miami,” said Bill Pohovey, WPLG’s VP of news.
WPLG reporter Hatzel Vela and photojournalist Brian Ely are living in Havana, and expect to provide daily news coverage.
“Hatzel and Brian are free to cover the stories they choose to cover,” said Pohovey.
“Having a reporter and photojournalist living in Cuba will give all of us a deeper understanding of what is happening on the island,” said Bert Medina, WPLG’s president.
For the article, I spoke to Vela in Havana and asked him how daily life in Cuba has changed since diplomatic relations have relaxed between the U.S. and Cuba.
Vela said that residents of the island now have access to WIFI, and the internet, something was very limited just a few years ago.
Here’s Vila’s first story from Cuba which aired on Monday’s 6 p.m. news on WPLG.
