WeatheRate, an independent, nonpartisan, weather verification company, has named NBC O&O WCAU to be the most accurate weather forecaster in Philadelphia.
“Forecasting weather in the Philadelphia market is not easy,” said Bruce Fixman, WeatheRate president who’s also a meteorologist.
“We understand the importance of an accurate forecast to help our viewers and digital followers plan their day,” said Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz, WCAU meteorologist, in a statement from the station.
“We refuse to just rely on computer-generated forecasts.”
In a 2014 Market Share column, WeatheRate Verifies ‘Most Accurate’ Weather Forecasts, I interviewed Bruce Fixman about the process.
According to Fixman, WeatheRate employees review the forecasts from TV stations in any given market.
The forecasts are then fed into WeatheRate’s patented software which compares the forecasts with the actual observed weather conditions to determine which TV stations are the most accurate.
WeatheRate tracks high and low temperatures, sky cover, precipitation, snow accumulations, wind and fog as well as timing of severe weather.
“We research 85 cities for a full year from March 1 through Feb. 28,” said Fixman.
But only one TV station can be the most accurate in each city.
WeatheRate then offers the stations with the most accurate weather forecast the opportunity to license their seal of approval for a year for a fee, based on market size.
