When teachers must resort to panhandling on the street corner, begging for school supplies, as a teacher in Oklahoma did just a few days ago, you know there’s a chronic need across this country for school supplies.
Teresa Danks, that Oklahoma third-grade teacher, was accustomed to getting creative when it comes to providing supplies for her classroom, hitting up yard sales, thrift stores and secondhand websites.
Danks said within 10 minutes, she had collected $32. One person stopped to hand her a bottle of water. Another wanted to tell her how much her own teachers had meant to her.
“I went from being nervous and awkward to being overwhelmed, not only with the small donations of cash but just the words of encouragement.”
Telemundo-owned KTLM in Rio Grande City, Texas, owned by NBC, will host a school supply drive this Saturday, July 29.
The effort is part of Supporting Our Schools, a month-long campaign by KTLM that raises awareness about classroom needs in the Rio Grande Valley.
The donated supplies will be distributed to local teachers and students throughout the year.
