High school students put their knowledge to the test every year in Rockford, Ill., in a television quiz show, Bergstrom Stateline Quiz Bowl, that’s entering its fourth season.
Who would think that students from one high school pitted against another, answering questions on various subjects like science, the arts, literature, history, and the like, would make for a successful local TV program?
“As we enter Season Four, the show continues to grow in scope and interest among viewers and the business community,” says Kelly Lattimer, general manager of WQRF, Rockford’s Fox affiliate owned by Nexstar, which provides services to WTVO, the ABC affiliate.
“Regardless of whether people have kids in school or not, they are watching and playing along every week. We’ve even heard people are having viewing parties.”
WTVO/WQRF’s Bergstrom Stateline Quiz Bowl is back!
And it’s got its own Facebook page.
As I said in another column about this quiz show, “WTVO’s Bergstrom Stateline Quiz Bowl brings together three of my favorite subjects: schools and education; hyper-local, unique programming; and a successful local TV sales idea that’s a win for everybody involved.
Every station wants to — or should want to — create local programming that reflects the best of its community. The key is to make it entertaining enough that people watch, and if it recruits younger viewers, so much the better.
And it’s got to make money, be financially viable year after year.”
“Creating good content that connects and resonates with viewers matters greatly to us as broadcasters serving a local community,” said Lattimer, “especially at a time when people can get whatever they want, whenever they want, wherever they want. It proves that people will still tune in to watch locally-originated programming that offers value to the viewer and business owner. And this show is doing exactly that.”
Bergstrom Stateline Quiz, a half-hour television show, kicks off its 32-week-run with a Season Four preview show in October.
