You have to wonder how long the deplorable conditions at a California mental hospital would have continued had it not been for a series of investigations by a local TV station that revealed patients sleeping and eating on the floor, moaning and crying out for help.
Leaked hidden camera video from inside the John George Psychiatric Hospital shown by KTVU, the Fox O&O in San Francisco, led to the resignation of the hospital’s director, the hiring of more staff and a state investigation into reports of violence at the facility.
In addition, the investigations, Mental Hospital Hell, led by KTVU’s Executive Producer Simone Aponte, Anchor Ken Wayne, Photographer/Videographer Tony Hodrick and News Editor Ron Acker, received the American Legion’s Fourth Estate Award for Excellence in Journalism.
The Fourth Estate Award is presented annually by The American Legion to a publication, broadcast organization or online media for outstanding achievement in journalism.
