WBAL, Hearst’s NBC affiliate in Baltimore, welcomed a new member to its family, introducing Puppy With A Purpose to viewers during a live national broadcast of NBC’s Today.
Working in cooperation with Today and America’s VetDogs, WBAL’s new puppy, an eight week-old female black Labrador Retriever, is set to undergo 16 months of training to become a service dog for a veteran of first responder with disabilities.
WBAL’s puppy will follow in the very large paw prints of Wrangler and Charlie, two earlier Puppies With A Purpose that the nation watched grow up and develop during broadcasts of Today.
The puppy is from America’s VetDogs, a nonprofit organization based in Smithtown, N.Y.
Through frequent visits to the set of 11 News Today, WBAL viewers will be able to keep track of the dog’s development as a future service dog.
WBAL is asking viewers to help choose the puppy’s name by casting votes on the station’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/wbaltv) or the station’s website (www.wbaltv.com).
Voting opened right after the puppy was introduced to viewers on Monday morning, and will continue through Tuesday, Feb. 27.
The puppy’s name will be announced on WBAL-TV 11 News Today (4:30-7 a.m.) on Wednesday morning, Feb. 28.
