WWL, Tegna’s New Orleans CBS affiliate, brought home six first-place awards — the most of any television station in Louisiana — in the 2017 Louisiana-Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters and Media Editors awards contest.
WWL’s news and investigative journalism claimed the top spot in a variety of categories.
The exclusive Eyewitness Investigation and hour-long TV-special on the failings of the Sewerage and Water Board, Down the Drain, received numerous honors at the ceremony. The investigation and accompanying digital content won first place for documentary and second place for multimedia story.
WWL swept the multimedia story category as investigative reporter Katie Moore and digital producer Sam Winstrom were awarded first place in the category for Searching for Ramona Brown: The Mystery.
WWL photographer Derek Waldrip was a two-time winner as he was awarded News Videographer of the Year as well as first place for short light feature for Katrina Can’t Stop the Music.
Former WWL reporter Ashley Rodrigue and Northshore bureau chief photographer Brian
Lukas won first place for sports story with their The Will to Walk.
And WWL producer Ian Kramar won best evening newscast in Louisiana in the ‘Television I’ category.
Also honored was WWL-TV meteorologist Dave Nussbaum for second place in the weathercast category.
“Our staff of journalists is honored to uphold WWL’s position as Louisiana’s News Leader”, said Keith Esparros, WWL’s executive producer.
