An EF-2 tornado destroyed homes in Greensboro, N.C., last week with wind speeds of 135 mph.
One person died when a tree landed on top of a vehicle. Much of the damage, including downed trees and toppled homes, occurred on the eastern side of the Guilford County city, roughly 80 miles west of Raleigh.
WGHP, Tribune’s Fox affiliate in close-by High Point, partnered with the Salvation Armies of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point and Burlington for an in-studio telethon last week that netted more than $70,000 to aid the recovery effort.
“Once again, in a time of great need the people of the Triad came together, and we could not be more proud,” said Jim Himes, WGHP’s general manager.
Major Don Vick of the Salvation Army of Greensboro, said: “We really appreciate what a great community citizen FOX8 is on an ongoing basis, but especially in this time of such great hurting in our community. We look forward to making a big difference in the lives of the people that have been affected by the tornado.”
All money pledged via the phone bank will be processed through the Salvation Armies of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point and Burlington and distributed locally.
The 13-hour in-studio telethon was staffed by Salvation Army volunteers, WGHP staff members, and numerous community leaders.
WGHP also leveraged the power of its more than 700,000 Facebook fans to spread the message on social media.
