To celebrate the station’s 60th anniversary, WTAE chose to draw attention to Pittsburgh’s hungry with an all-day telethon to collect food for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. “In our minds the only way to truly honor our 60-year relationship with the Pittsburgh community was to give back,” said Charles W. Wolfertz, WTAE’s general manager.
WTAE, Pittsburgh’s ABC affiliate owned by Hearst, is celebrating its 60th broadcasting anniversary by serving the hungry in its communities.
Throughout the day tomorrow, Sept. 12, WTAE is televising Project Hunger: Day of Giving, two days prior to the station’s 60th anniversary.
Project Hunger: Day of Giving started in January 2018 to bring awareness to food insecurity issues in local neighborhoods.
Beginning at 5 in the morning and continuing through 6:30 p.m., the Project Hunger: Day of Giving telethon will be broadcast during segments of newscasts and in breaks throughout regularly scheduled programming.
All proceeds benefit the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
“More than 325,000 people in southwestern Pennsylvania are food insecure, said Lisa Scales, CEO of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
“Local parents struggle to feed their families, while working two or three jobs. Our senior citizens are choosing between paying for medicine or buying food. Our mission is to eliminate hunger and we couldn’t ask for a better partner that WTAE Channel 4.”
