Kindergarten through third grade students attending Indianapolis public schools just got a reading assignment thanks to WTTV, Tribune’s CBS affiliate there.
The station collected, organized and distributed 10,000 books as part of a new program, CBS4 Reads Book Drive.
The drive, which began on July 7, exceeded its goal of 6,000 books with dozens of locations around Central Indiana including several drop-off sites at sponsor Giordano’s pizza restaurants.
On Sept. 15, volunteers from Indianapolis Public Schools and WTTV sorted those books by grade level and started delivering them to students on Sept. 17 during a pep rally at CFI 70.
“The community’s reaction to help give students free books in Central Indiana was overwhelming,” said Kerri Cavanaugh, WTTV’s VP of news.
“Their generous donations will have a lasting impact on Indiana’s Very Own.”
“More children will get to share the love of reading thanks to the CBS4 Reads program,” said Jamie Aitken, WTTV’s general manager.
“We couldn’t have done it without the support from the community, 2 Men and a Truck who picked up all of the donations, and Giordano’s for sponsoring this event.”
