“The visual part of storytelling has long been a hallmark here at KCCI, and a recognizable part of what makes us ‘Iowa’s News Leader’,” said Donna Smith, KCCI chief photographer.
KCCI, Hearst’s CBS affiliate in Des Moines, Iowa, has been named national Station of the Year in the small market category by the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA).
This distinction is considered the top award for news photography and videography in the country. KCCI has been honored six times in previous years: 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014.
The NPPA describes the Station of the Year honor as recognition for a team who shows “consistency in providing outstanding news photography coverage for and about the audience it serves.”
They go on to say, “Selection as Station of the Year honors excellence, and most importantly, it serves to raise the standards of the industry.”
“From feature stories to storm coverage and breaking news, KCCI photographers regularly demonstrate not only their technical skills and talents, but their dedication to visual storytelling,” said Brian Sather, KCCI’s general manager.
“They cover stories in some of the harshest conditions in Central Iowa, and constantly explore new ways to use technology — like the Sky 8 drone — to give viewers an unrivaled view of their community.”
“Our photographers take us to the front lines of every story,” said Allison Smith, KCCI’s news director. “While they may prefer to work in the background, their craft makes our entire newsroom stand out.”
“The visual part of storytelling has long been a hallmark here at KCCI, and a recognizable part of what makes us ‘Iowa’s News Leader’,” said Donna Smith, KCCI’s chief photographer.
“We couldn’t be prouder to receive this award for a seventh time.”
