OK, rave may be going too far. But over the past five years, I’ve received many comments from readers about Market Share. And I appreciate each and every one. So I thought I’d share some of their thoughts.
OK, maybe rave is an over-statement, but hopefully it got your attention.
Five years ago, TVNewsCheck changed the Market Share blog from weekly to daily. Since then, more than 2,000 posts have come out.
(By the way, all of the Market Share columns are available to read. However, since TVNewsCheck went to a secure, redesigned web site in January, prior columns lost some video examples and graphics. You can find all of the 2,000 or more articles by going to the Market Share banner on the TVNewsCheck home page, and clicking directly on the banner as illustrated below).
At the time I started writing the columns, I believed there was a dearth of coverage about local TV news, marketing and sales. I wanted to share the stories about what was happening on the ground at TV stations. Innovations, award-winners, news ratings increases, creative and effective marketing campaigns, and local sales initiatives, social media advances, just to name a few.
I believe that something interesting is happening almost every day at TV stations across the country, in markets large and small, and I wanted to find those stories and share them.
I am a believer in local TV. And my hope is that by sharing the best work, it will inspire all of us to make our product more valuable to viewers.
Over the past five years, I’ve received many comments from readers about Market Share. And I appreciate each and every one. So I thought I’d share some of those comments, like this one from Rod Peterson, the news director at WHO, the Tribune NBC affiliate in Des Moines, Iowa.
Peterson is writing about a recent column featuring WHO, WHO Earns Journalism Awards From 2 State Groups. He agreed to allow me to share his comments here.
Thank you for highlighting the latest peer recognition of the local reporting and forecasting by the team here at WHO-HD. Over my 13 years in Des Moines, you have showcased the work of these talented folks I am blessed to support. I imagine most times you receive feedback about your reporting when it is critical. But, for my 30 years in the business, I have valued your insight and your insider information: favorable and unfavorable.
You consistently provide thoughtful, detailed and comprehensive reporting and analysis. Your fact-based reporting on the latest news in the broadcasting and cable industry is valued and appreciated. Respect for your impressive body of work is especially appreciated by those of us working in small markets like Des Moines.
Recognition from you allows even more people to see the care and the commitment of the journalists and meteorologists at WHO-HD. I am so grateful. It means so much to all of us in flyover country.
Here are some other comments. Since I didn’t seek permission to use their names publicly, I’ll keep them anonymous.
You really do have a grasp of the things that are affecting TV, cable & the web. This is one of your best articles ever. The article is informative yet not too lengthy.
Thank you for taking the time to dive into this, we are proud of how our Chopper and Drone complement one another in news gathering. This truly is a great testament to the POWER of our brand and the PASSION of the people who make it all happen day in and day out.
Thanks so much for investing your time and space discussing our station. I have to tell you – I’m impressed by YOUR journalism. To find and review those specific stories and add that much meat to the story shows your commitment to journalism.
I just read your article on the promotional campaign. I really appreciate your reporting on “how” the production house did the campaign. I’ll recommend that we try the same campaign based on your article. I know some stations don’t give the process – but it’s very educational and helpful to know the specifics. The more in-depth on your reporting the better. Keep up the good work. I’ll see really good ideas, but there is little reporting on the “process” or the “blueprint” stations used to execute their projects.
Wow, Paul! What a surprise. I hadn’t had a chance to check the site yet this morning when my GM walked into my office and was gushing about the article. I popped it up on my screen and saw the wonderful write-up you did.
Thank you for the article! I really appreciate the way it was put together. I hope more CSDs can build off that spot and make it their own! Getting a lot of great feedback form the CSDs in our company on the spots and the article.
Paul – you’ve done a great job during the past year. Keep up the good work! I check your blog once or twice a week. So do a few folks on my team. Glad to have you representing our collective voices on TVNewsCheck.

A powerful story, Paul.
I thought the article came out great and really captured the spirit of the station’s longstanding commitment to the community. Everyone here was thrilled to see the coverage.
Thank you for your commitment for sharing updates on local TV markets. I really enjoy the feed and the reads!
Appreciate all you do throughout the year to keep our marketing world top of mind in a changing industry.
Look forward to reading it daily—you always deliver good ideas and thinking. Best of all, you shine a light on our woefully misunderstood and underappreciated mission!
You do such AMAZING reporting on the public service/investigative works of broadcasters.
I saw your article today regarding the promos with attitude. I laughed out loud.
Paul, your contributions make LinkedIn more engaging. Thank you for another great post.
