This past week on TVNewsCheck’s Media Job Center, Nexstar, Cox, News-Press & Gazette, Pikes Peak Television, and one unnamed broadcast company posted job openings at stations in Boston, Memphis, Norfolk/Portsmouth, Idaho Falls, Colorado Springs and somewhere on the East Coast.
In a blind ad, a major station group is looking for a dynamic news director to lead the news department of a dominant No. 1 station in a top 70 market. This is an East Coast gig located in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. They are looking for a leader with great news judgement, communication skills and the ability to inspire their team.
The ability to work as a team with other department heads will be crucial for this position. The news director will be expected to collaborate with sales, creative services and engineering to ensure that the station has the best product on the air while also driving revenue. This is a station with the resources, experience and, most importantly, the attitude to win even bigger in this market.
KRDO, the ABC affiliate in Colorado Springs, owned by Pikes Peak Television, a subsidiary of News-Press & Gazette, needs a news director.
The news director is responsible for the overall supervision and development of the news department staff, providing direction in story selection, story-telling and coverage. The station is looking for someone with the proven ability to manage, coach, critique and motivate the news team.
Although Colorado Springs is the state’s second largest city, it doesn’t feel big, more quaint and picturesque. The Air Force Academy is here, so is the U.S. Olympic Training Center. NPG of Idaho needs a director of sales for its station group in Idaho Falls that includes KIFI (ABC), KIDF (CBS), KXPI (Fox), CW, and Telemundo.
The director of sales will be responsible for achieving the revenue goals of these stations, and manage the sales, traffic and commercial production departments. You will prepares the spot sales and commercial revenue budgets for the group, develop with particular emphasis on local sales, including a laser focus on direct, new local direct and digital advertiser sales.
Idaho Falls is the principal city in the state’s third largest metro area and is touted as being “as big as you want it to be” in terms of cultural and economic opportunities. The riverside Art Museum of Eastern Idaho showcases eclectic works. Downtown’s Museum of Idaho has local history exhibits, including items linked to the Lewis and Clark expedition and a re-created 1800’s town.
WFXT, Cox’s Fox affiliate in Boston, needs an assignment editor who reports to the assignment manager. The assignment editor will track, organize and communicate information relevant to all platforms while keeping a “digital first” mentality. Assignment editors are the “go-to” people for learning and owning breaking news. Assignment editors also dispatch and track crews.

The right person will be a leader responsible for implementing initiatives to grow revenue through providing value to broadcast and digital customers. This individual will play an important role in the development and implementation of sales strategies and staff leadership. This position requires an individual with a proven record of accomplishment in team development and staff motivation.
The Hampton Roads area refers to both the bodies of water surrounding metropolitan southeastern Virginia, and the towns of Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Newport News. Hampton Roads is known for its large military presence, ice-free harbor, shipyards and miles of waterfront property and beaches, all of which contribute to the diversity and stability of the region’s economy. The body of water known as Hampton Roads is one of the world’s largest natural harbors. WAVY is located in Portsmouth, just across the bridge over the Elizabeth River from Norfolk.
WATN, the ABC affiliate in Memphis, part of Nexstar’s duopoly including WLMT (CW), needs a promotions producer/editor to deliver the best on-air and online promotion product in the market. Candidates must have extensive non-linear editing experience. This position is responsible for writing, shooting and editing news image campaigns and proof-of-performance promotions. This person will work closely with the news department to conceptualize, write, shoot and edit daily newscast topical promotions, special projects and sweeps promotions. A minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a broadcast television promotions producer is necessary.
