WPTV Meteorologist Takes 120-Mile Bike Ride For Charity

Taking a 120-mile bike ride down the beach with WPTV’s Chief Meteorologist Steve Weagle looks like fun. But the best part is he raises money for charity and awareness about the beginning of hurricane season along the way.

If you think a 120-mile bike ride down the beach along the the eastern coast of Florida from Sebastian to Boca Raton over five days sounds like fun, so do I.

And it looks like fun when WPTV’s Chief Meteorologist Steve Weagle does it for his annual Steve’s Ride for the American Red Cross. WPTV is the NBC affiliate in  West Palm Beach owned by Scripps.

This year, his 21st, Steve’s Ride started on Monday, May 27 in Sebastian and ended Friday, May 31, in Boca Raton, and along the way he managed to raise more than $164,000 for the American Red Cross, and increased awareness about the beginning of hurricane season.

In Florida, hurricane season is serious business.

Lloyd Bucher

“While the market groans collectively as we enter hurricane season, Steve’s bike ride also performs the dual task of bringing awareness to the beginning of the season as well,” said Lloyd Bucher, WPTV’s general manager.

While there was no rain during Steve’s Ride, this may have been one of the hottest years for the ride with temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s every day.
