Dogs try wagging more and barking less. Cats have retracted their claws in favor of deeper purrs. Birds are preening their feathers and whistling their best songs. Bunnies are wiggling their noses for just the right look. Pigs are avoiding the sty to keep their pink skin clean.
And for thousands of pets in shelters, this Saturday will have a happy ending.
It could be the plot for a new animated movie.

On this day, more than 1,400 animal shelters and rescues in the U.S. and Puerto Rico will waive or reduce their adoption fees to help families adopt a pet.
Since 2015, NBCUniversal’s Clear The Shelters campaign has resulted in more than quarter million pet adoptions.

Kelly Clarkson will host a special Clear The Shelters show that will air on NBC stations beginning Aug. 23 (check local listings).
“I am a huge animal lover and can tell you from personal experience that when you open your heart and home to a rescue animal, your pet will thank you every single day of its life,” said Clarkson.
“I’m so excited for people to discover this feeling when they find their perfect pet on August 17, and to tell all the amazing pet adoption stories from this year’s Clear The Shelter’s campaign,” Clarkson added.
The show will recap this year’s popular nationwide pet adoption campaign.
