The program recapped 10 years of Honor Flights for Iowa veterans to Washington. “Being a first-hand witness to the power of Iowa’s Honor Flights has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career,” said Eric Hanson, KCCI reporter.
KCCI, Hearst’s CBS affiliate in Des Moines, Iowa, was selected by the Upper Midwest Chapter NATAS chapter for its 2019 Board of Governors Emmy Award for the special This is Iowa: Decade of Honor.
The program recapped 10 years of Honor Flights for Iowa veterans to Washington.
For the special, Eric Hanson, KCCI reporter and Glen Biermann, KCCI photographer, joined the latest honor flight from central Iowa. They also interviewed veterans who were on the original flight about how the journey impacted their lives.
“Being a first-hand witness to the power of Iowa’s Honor Flights has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career,” said Hanson.
“Knowing KCCI’s coverage directly contributed to thousands of Iowa’s heroes getting to see their memorials over the last decade is so fulfilling. I’m so honored that so many veterans trusted us to share their stories.”
This program was started following a story in May 2009 by Hanson that inspired local sponsors starting with Hy-Vee and Casey’s General Stores to get involved in providing the funds for this opportunity.
The Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) describe the Governor’s Award as their most prestigious.
