“Normally for a big celebration like this, we would gather a bunch of people and put them on the set and bring out a cake and really celebrate,” said Andrew Felix, WEAU’s creative services director. “However, because of COVID-19 and social distancing we had to do things differently.”

WEAU, Gray’s NBC affiliate in Eau Claire, Wis, (DMA 129), didn’t want to let Judy Clark’s 30th anniversary at the station go by without a celebration. It just had to be a little more creative in light of the coronavirus.
Clark started her career at WEAU as a general assignment reporter in 1990. Clark, who grew up in Eau Claire, co-anchors the station’s 5 o’clock newscast as well as anchoring the noon newscast, and produces and anchors the station’s 10 a.m. news.
“Normally for a big celebration like this, we would gather a bunch of people and put them on the set and bring out a cake and really celebrate,” said Andrew Felix, WEAU’s creative services director. “However, because of COVID-19 and social distancing we had to do things differently.”

“We shot all of our other on-air staff and general manager in separate locations,” Felix added. “Some staff sent in videos from their homes that they are working out of. We also asked current and past staff to send in photos with a sign celebrating her anniversary. We broadcast the segment at the very end our 5pm news which Judy anchors. It was a huge success and we have received a lot of positive feedback. The segment was also posted on Facebook and received a ton of likes, positive comments and shares.”

Felix planned, organized and shot all of the video for this segment, he credits Carrie Vigo, one of his creative services producers with editing it and coming up with the idea of reaching out to past employees and getting the photos with a sign.
Clark graduated from the journalism program at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and worked for WAXX-FM as a news reporter before joining WEAU. She has anchored WEAU’s 5 o’clock newscast for more than 20 years.
