WJXT Examines Law Ending Hairstyle Discrimination

The series explores how the Crown Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) works to make it illegal to discriminate against someone over how they wear their hair.

WJXT, Graham Media’s independent station in Jacksonville, Fla., is airing a special series called Passing the Crown.

In the series, Eden Kendall, host of River City Live, sits down with WJXT anchors and reporters who have made the decision to wear their hair in a natural state. River City Live airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on WJXT.

The series explores how the Crown Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) works to make it illegal to discriminate against someone over how they wear their hair.

Twenty-three states have introduced CROWN legislation including Georgia, Florida and Arizona.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill on Sept. 21, 2020. A companion bill was introduced in the Senate two days later but it failed to reach a floor vote before the end of the year. All pending legislation must be refiled in the new Congress.

The series is part of WJXT’s celebration of Black History Month.
