WCIU (CW26) and WRME-LP (MeTV FM), Weigel Broadcasting stations in Chicago, held a food donation drive last weekend that asked viewers to “Fill A Bag, Fill A Bus” to help hungry Chicagoans.
The stations, along with their sponsors, Jewel-Osco, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD), collected enough food to provide more than 12,300 meals.
The two-day drive was held at two different Jewel-Osco locations. Volunteers from the Greater Chicago Food Depository asked shoppers if they would fill a Jewel-Osco bag with non-perishables. The bag had a flyer on it listing most-needed items.
The drive filled a Chicago Transit Authority Bus with food each day.
Special guest, Steve Wilkos, host of the daytime talk show, The Steve Wilkos Show, was at the Jewel-Osco on Friday encouraging shoppers to “Fill A Bag, Fill A Bus.”
Since 2016, WICU has partnered with the Food Depository, making ending hunger in Chicago a priority.
During the last “Fill A Bag, Fill A Bus” event in 2019, the station and its viewers provided 37,354 meals for local families.
