From October 2022 to the end of the year, the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation donated money to the United Way, local food banks, the Salvation Army, veterans programs and other community organization across seven markets where Nexstar owns a TV station.
The Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation’s mission is to contribute to and work with public charities and nonprofit organizations to improve the communities in which Nexstar Media and its subsidiaries do business. The foundation was originally established in 1958 and it makes donations of approximately $350,000 annually
In Wilkes-Barre, Pa., the foundation and WBRE, Nexstar’s NBC affiliate, donated $5,000 to the Luzerne Foundation.
The Luzerne Foundation works to enhance the lives of Luzerne County residents by evaluating and addressing community needs through strategic grant making, promoting responsible philanthropy, and connecting donors to causes that matter to them.
“Through their support of local non-profits, they help literally thousands of children in NEPA; making the Luzerne Foundation an ideal partner for our mission of putting children first,” says Andrew Wyatt, WBRE’s GM.
In Fort Wayne, Ind., WANE, Nexstar’s ABC affiliate, donated $5,000 to Honor Flight of Northeast Indiana.
Honor Flight Northeast Indiana is a recognized, independent hub of the Honor Flight network and was created to transport veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials built in their honor.
“Our veterans deserve this incredible journey to their memorials in Washington,” says Tom Antisdel, WANE’s GM. “Giving back to the communities served by Nexstar across the country is core to the company’s mission, and we are honored that the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation is making this donation in recognition of the deep relationship between WANE 15 and Honor Flight Northeast Indiana.”
WXIN and WTTV, the Nexstar stations serving Indianapolis and Central Indiana, donated $5,000 each to two area food banks: Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana and Midwest Food Bank of Indiana.
Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana has been leading the fight against hunger in Indiana since 1980.
They distribute food to hungry Hoosiers through a network of nearly 300 partner agencies, including emergency food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters.
Midwest Food Bank currently distributes nearly $36 million worth of food to over 2,050 non-profits each month.
“The number of families in central Indiana who are experiencing hunger and food insecurity is staggering,” says Dominic Mancuso, the stations’ general manager. “Supporting these local food banks is core to the company’s mission and we are proud the Foundation once again will make this donation in recognition of the strong relationship between FOX 59 and CBS 4, our employees, and these crucial organizations.”
The Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation and WAVY and WVBT, Nexstar’s stations in Portsmouth, Va., donated $10,000 to United Way of South Hampton Roads. The donation will be designated to the Hope & Healing Fund.
On Nov. 22, a gunman opened fire at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Va., killing six and injuring others. United Way of South Hampton Roads launched the Hope & Healing Fund to support the hope and healing of the broader community impacted by the tragedy. The funds raised will support solutions centered on mental health and violence prevention and 100% of the funds will go toward this effort.
“We live, work and report on behalf of this community every day,” says Carol Ward, WAVY-WVBT general manager. “By partnering with the United Way of South Hampton Roads, we hope to raise much needed awareness to the difficulties that impact all of Hampton Roads.”
In La Crosse/Eau Claire, Wis., the foundation and Nexstar’s WLAX-WEUZ donated $2,500 to the Chippewa Valley Veterans Foundation.
Chippewa Valley Veterans Foundation, which is made up of members of the 14 veteran services organizations in Eau Claire County that serve their local veterans and their families, is currently building Veterans Park, a proper tribute in the Chippewa Valley where flag holidays could be celebrated and honored.
Once the park is completed, programs will be created that will aid in some of the most perilous obstacles facing veterans such as homelessness, suicide prevention, mental health support, housing, job placement, and readjustment into civilian life.
“The Chippewa Valley Veterans Foundation makes a tangible difference in the Eau Claire community and to the lives of our local veterans,” says Cory Gylock, WLAX’s GM. “We’re so proud to align with this organization and grateful for the services they provide to the Chippewa Valley.”
WMBB, Nexstar’s ABC affiliate in Panama City, Fla., and the foundation donated $10,000 to The Salvation Army Panama City. The donation will be used to support their Empty Stocking fund, which helps hundreds of local families around Christmas time.
Their Empty Stocking Fund makes sure those who are struggling are able to put food on the table and gifts under the tree during the holidays, as well as providing services throughout the year with housing, support for domestic violence victims, utilities’ assistance and more.
“The Florida Panhandle has been through a lot over the last five years, from Hurricane Michael to COVID19 and now one of our largest employers, the Paper Mill, shutting its doors,” says Terry Cole, WMBB’s GM. “I’m thrilled that the Nexstar Foundation has decided to step up to help this community through the Empty Stocking Fund which will help serve so many of these residents during the Holiday season.”
Nexstar’s ABC affiliate WSYR Syracuse, N.Y., donated $5,000 to the Central New York Community Foundation. The donation will be designated to the “Carrie Lazarus Fund for Extraordinary Talent.”
WSYR’s Carrie Lazarus established the Fund for Extraordinary Talent in 2013 to support performing arts students in Central New York who lack the financial means to further their training. Lazarus spent more than 30 years on the anchor desk at WSYR before dedicating herself full time to Carrie Lazarus Presents: Extraordinary People and Places of Central New York, which airs several times each year on WSYR.
“As we celebrate 10 Years of Extraordinary Talent and the number of individuals the Fund for Extraordinary Talent has helped over the years, it is a truly special milestone,” says Bill Evans, WSYR’s GM. “Carrie created this fund to enrich and help the many and very talented musicians, singers and dancers who would not have the means otherwise to succeed and reach their fullest artistic potential.”
WSYR also donated $5,000 to the Salvation Army Syracuse Area Services.
The Salvation Army of the Syracuse Area is dedicated to meeting human needs without discrimination, and to encourage and empower those in need to reach their full potential.
“The number of families and individuals who are struggling with hunger and food insecurity is overwhelming,” Evans added. “At a time when food costs are increasing at incredible rates this donation to the Salvation Army and their Food Pantry could not come at a better time as we head into the holiday season.”
