The series of major winter storms cut power to thousands, flooded entire neighborhoods, toppled trees and unleashed debris flows. The flooding resulted in millions of dollars of damage to homes, agricultural land and businesses. Residents continue to be displaced.
KSBW, Hearst’s ABC/NBC affiliate in Salinas, Calif., held a one-day telethon to support people impacted by the devastating January storms on the Central Coast.
On Tuesday, Jan. 31, KSBW 8, Central Coast ABC, and Estrella TV Costa Central aired messages throughout the day and aired coverage during each edition of KSBW Action News 8, requesting donations.
The three weeks of heavy flooding affected people and property in Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito County.
The series of major winter storms cut power to thousands, flooded entire neighborhoods, toppled trees and unleashed debris flows. The flooding resulted in millions of dollars of damage to homes, agricultural land and businesses. Residents continue to be displaced.
Partnering with the American Red Cross of the Central Coast, the telethon raised $160,077, with donations coming from individuals, companies and organizations who generously gave money to help those in need.

“We are so appreciative of KSBW’s efforts to make this telethon happen and I value our partnership,” says Michele Averill, CEO, American Red Cross of the Central Coast. “We also couldn’t be more grateful for the donors whose generous support is making a difference for the many people so tragically affected by these storms.”

“KSBW 8, Central Coast ABC and Estrella TV Costa Central have long been dedicated to serving the community and we are honored to have partnered with the American Red Cross to help raise funds for our neighbors who were greatly affected by the storms,’” says Laura Williamson, KSBW GM.
