The entire KPRC news team, partnering with law enforcement, nonprofits and legal advocates, contributed on a wealth of subjects, including teen dating violence, relationship red flags, men who are abused, cultural differences, dating app violence, sextortion, abuse in a same-sex relationship, and many others.
Local TV news can be highly effective change agents in their communities when it comes to difficult issues such as domestic violence.
They have the authority. They have the resources — a newsroom of producers, reporters, anchors and photographers. They have the time — typically, local TV news has an average of five to seven hours of news a day. And they have access to experts.
During the week of Feb. 12, KPRC, Graham Media’s NBC affiliate in Houston, partnering with law enforcement, nonprofits and legal advocates across the greater Houston area, and devoted the week to reporting on escaping and ending domestic and partner violence. The reports, titled “Breaking Free”, aired on KPRC and streamed on KPRC 2+.
“Breaking Free” focused on stopping partner violence, with the goal of providing support, resources, and solutions that can save lives.
The entire KPRC 2 news team and the Houston Life team contributed on a wealth of subjects, including teen dating violence, relationship red flags, men who are abused, cultural differences, dating app violence, sextortion, abuse in a same-sex relationship and many others.

“We feel an obligation to our community to shed light on this often overlooked and dangerous problem,” says Phil Lane, KPRC’s general manager. “This is another step in our ongoing effort to bring help and solutions to Houston.”

This an excellent example of what the power of local tv and journalism can accomplish. Domestic violence is rampant and a too often overlooked problem. Kudos KPRC! Let’s hope other stations follow suit.
