NOTE: TVNewsCheck does print sweeps performance stories from newspaper articles and other media. But if you have a sweeps/ratings story to tell, I ask that stations try and put that performance into some kind of context. Why did your station do well, do you think? What did your station do differently from a marketing and /or coverage point of view? And I ask for relevant marketing examples as well as actual news coverage on Youtube, or Vimeo. This story was the result of this process.
“We’ve worked really hard to focus the types of stories we do, and the approach to our daily news coverage in a way that viewers and online users can easily see that we are in it for them,” says Joe Abouzeid, WIVB’s general manager. “We want our viewers to see an accurate picture of Buffalo when they consume our news- both good and what needs to be fixed. That approach is really resonating.”
“Buffalo is a very competitive market,” says Sherry Burns, WIVB’s creative services director. “What’s changed since February 2022 is that News 4 ranks #1 in Adults 25-54, and #1 in Women 25-54 for the 5 and 6PM newscasts. We attribute this to several factors. A renewed focus on an historic brand. ‘We’re 4 Buffalo’ means that News 4 continues to focus on viewer advocacy through the types of stories we tell and the way we cover everyday news.”
“Call 4 Action and News 4 Investigates are vehicles we use to advocate for our viewers, hold the powerful accountable and help everyday residents of Buffalo and Western New York,” Burns says. “It is content that is relevant and important to viewers, delivered by anchors and reporters they know and trust.”
