In Sioux Falls, S.D., the foundation and Nexstar’s KELO (branded as KELOLAND), donated $5,000 to the South Dakota State University Foundation.
The donation will be used to support the professional development of students at the School of Communication and Journalism. Ten journalism students will receive funding to attend the 2024 Midwest Journalism Conference, which KELOLAND has been actively involved with.
The SDSU Foundation, founded in 1946, raises and administers scholarship funds that benefit thousands of students and spearheads private fundraising campaigns for multimillion-dollar capital projects.
In Wheeling, W.Va., the foundation and Nexstar’s WTRF donated $5,000 to Wheeling Health Right.
Wheeling Health Right serves 27,000 medically underserved, uninsured or under-insured people in six surrounding counties of Wheeling. Its clinic provides free comprehensive medical care and pharmaceuticals to Ohio Valley patients in need. Wheeling Health Right promotes wellness by offering educational coaching on disease prevention and behavior modifications that can lead to living a healthier life.
In Lansing, Mich., the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation and WLNS donated $5,000 to the Michigan State University’s Spartan Strong fund.
On Feb. 13, a mass shooting occurred in two buildings on the campus of Michigan State University. Three students were killed and five others injured. While MSU is covering hospital bills for the injured students, the Spartan Strong Fund has been created to provide support for the evolving needs of the individuals most critically impacted. The fund will also be used for student and staff counseling, as well as recognition for those involved with the crisis, such as first responders. Each situation and need is unique and evolving, but the university is committed to working with those most critically impacted to identify meaningful ways to provide support.
In Birmingham, N.Y., the foundation and WIVT and WBGH, donated $5,000 to the United Way of Broome County.
The donation will be designated to United Way’s Full Plate Project, an initiative designed to ensure no one in the community has to make an impossible choice between food and other necessities like medicine, utilities, or childcare. One hundred percent of all contributions to this initiative go to food insecurity programs.
When people face hunger, they often struggle to meet other basic needs. With rising costs of housing, healthcare, and more, the issues of hunger continue to plague the most vulnerable in the community. The demand for emergency food has grown as inflation increased with local food pantry meals in Broome County doubling from over 350,000 meals in 2021 to over 625,000 in 2022. Last year, United Way’s Full Plate Project raised over $111,000 and was able to fully support food and hunger programs in Broome County.
Following a deadly EF-3 tornado in March, the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation and WTWO Terre Haute, Ind., donated $10,000 to assist with the cleanup and recovery efforts.
The foundation’s contribution will go to the Wabash Valley Community Foundation which launched an emergency and disaster relief fund to help support recovery and relief efforts and help prioritize immediate and long-term recovery and relief efforts for those impacted by the storms.
In Tyler, Texas, the foundation and KETK donated $2,500 to the United Way of Smith County.
United Way of Smith County brings together local companies, individuals, government and nonprofit agencies to tackle big issues. The organization raises funds that support more than 30 essential programs that target four essential impact areas: Education, Health & Wellness, Financial Stability, and Crisis Intervention. By focusing on these impact areas, the organization hopes to ensure that every citizen in Smith County has access to education, adequate health care services, help in the midst of a crisis, and a clear path toward financial stability.
