On Wednesday, Aug. 2, approximately 250 shelter cats and dogs will be put aboard charter planes headed to shelters in New Jersey and New Hampshire that will provide any needed medical care and place the pets for adoption.
NBCUniversal Local today announced its 2022 Clear The Shelters nationwide pet adoption and donation campaign (Aug. 1-31) helped more than 161,500 pets, and counting, find new homes – the highest single-year adoption total in the initiative’s eight-year history.
And another 100,000 animals — dogs, cats, pigs, rabbits, hamsters, hedgehogs, turtles, ferrets, monkeys, donkeys, lizards and cows — are expected to make a mass exodus in the next 30 days. But there’s no need for alarm. It’s the result of NBCUniversal Local’s on-going campaign since 2015, Clear The Shelters, and those 700,000 pets are in new homes.
Since 2018, the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation and NBC/Telemundo owned stations have presented a total of $14.3 million in Project Innovation grants to 389 nonprofits.
The pets were dogs and cats of course, but rabbits, birds, pigs, hamsters, reptiles and horses were also adopted. More than 1,300 animal shelters and rescues in 49 states, Puerto Rico and Guam participated in this year’s campaign.
