A search of YouTube reveals some recent news image spots on the air in Australia, Cleveland, Fort Wayne, Sacramento and Jacksonville.
Santa, in one continuous 30-second take, stops by the news anchor desk, a dairy farmer endorses a morning weather lady and a punchy political coverage spot are some of the new promos from Boston, Milwaukee, Tampa and other markets around the country.
WPTA, Quincy’s NBC affiliate in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, took home the top prize for Overall Excellence in the Lower Great Lakes Emmy Awards. “In doing so,” said Jonathan Shelley, WPTA’s news director, “a station that scarcely operated as a traditional Big Four affiliate just a few years ago took home the statuette over six other finalists – all from long-established broadcast operations in Indianapolis and Cleveland.”
This spot isn’t really about snow at all. I like this spot because it didn’t resort to scary news footage of snow. Instead, its simple studio production using fake snow and happy meteorologists dovetailed with its message.
A 23-year-old was killed in an industrial accident. Her employer had intentionally disabled safety features on the press she operated, and was fined just $6,300. WPTA’s investigation revealed that the fines for death on the job in Indiana were so low, “it doesn’t cost that much to kill someone.”
A local photographer and her work bring comfort and joy to the families of children who face serious and sometimes terminal illnesses. When WPTA aired this special, viewers were touched and flooded the station with comments like this one: “This was one of the best things I’ve ever seen … truly. Loved and appreciated every minute!”
