Let’s just start out by saying Mike Darrah has lived and worked in some nice, warm, sunny places.
Right now, Darrah’s living in Honolulu where he’s just been named the news director at KITV, He had been the assistant news director there for almost four years.
KITV is the ABC affiliate in Honolulu owned by SJL Broadcasting.
Before that, he lived and worked in Orlando, Fla., where I worked with him at WESH, the NBC affiliate there.
“People pay me to work in Hawaii! On every single commute, I’m that guy craning his neck and marveling at the views,” said Darrah. “This is the most amazing place on Earth, and even as I try to coach a newsroom, I’m also playing the role of student, learning about Hawaiian culture daily.”
I’m Facebook friends with Darrah and really enjoy seeing the pictures he posts and reading about his family’s adventures there.
The station’s website has some unique island features like the Hawaiian Word of the Day or visiting local places in Where You Live.
When you click on News, you’ll see the usual options of politics, elections, money, local or national news and one category you won’t see on many station websites, Surf.
Here are two stories from Surf, one about massive wipeouts, and the other about how big swells mean big business.
