Old television shows don’t die; they live on and on if you know where to look.
Known as diginets, subchannels, multicast networks or dot-twos, various secondary networks bring them back to life everyday across the country, generating millions in revenue today, probably much more than they did when they aired originally.
Private-eye capers, cop shows, sitcoms, game shows, talk shows, and old films all are being enjoyed by an audience who perhaps watched them way back in the day, while some are creating a new audience of fans not yet born when they aired originally.
All this week, Market Share will be profiling how these networks market their shows with often wildly inventive, creative and often hilarious promos to create awareness and drive viewership for shows many of us watched and may have forgotten still exist.
MeTV, abbreviated from Memorable Entertainment Television and owned by Weigel Broadcasting, is the highest ranked in terms of TV households covered.
Bonanza lives here, as does The Brady Bunch, Lucy, Gilligan’s crew, Happy Days, Gunsmoke and M*A*S*H, to name a few.
So how does MeTV market its shows?
MeTV Marketing Ambassadors, according to Will Givens, network marketing VP for Weigel.
Like Dawn Wells, famous as Mary Ann on Gilligan’s Island, and Barry Williams, who played Greg on The Brady Bunch.
Wells and Williams represent MeTV and its classic programming around the country on a variety of outlets.
They appear on national TV and radio publicity appearances, magazine profiles, social media engagement and making appearances in many cities across the country with MeTV affiliates.
Both actors have been featured in MeTV network on-air promotions.
“MeTV fans and viewers are passionate and engaged,” says Givens. “They seem to truly appreciate connecting with Dawn and Barry as MeTV Ambassadors. This viewer affection is genuine and allows MeTV to engage with our viewers in special ways beyond traditional media.”
NOTE: Some of the best TV programs airing on MeTV are also some the best TV programs that have aired on television over the years, including M*A*S*H, Cheers, The Honeymooners, The Odd Couple and The Twilight Zone.
But you can also see Steve McQueen on Wanted: Dead Or Alive, or Alfred Hitchcock’s quirky dramas, too.
Here are a couple of insanely creative promos I featured in an earlier Market Share post titled, MeTV Has The Cleverest Promos In The World.
