In Fayetteville, Ark., it’s all about the hogs. The hogs refers to the mascot of the University of Arkansas, the razorback, a type of wild boar, and when you cheer for the Razorbacks, it’s known as calling the hogs, a tradition of students, alumni and sports fans around the state.
Fayetteville is home to the University of Arkansas, the state’s largest university. So to highlight its coverage of Razorback football, KNWA, the Nexstar-owned NBC affiliate in Northwest Arkansas, commissioned a song to use as the opening for its Saturday morning football preview program, Razorback Nation Game Day, which also airs on Nexstar’s NBC affiliate in Little Rock, KARK.
“That gives us state-wide coverage for Razorback football fans,” says Jody Birchfield, KNWA’s promotion manager.
The song was co-written by local singer/songwriter Barrett Baber, and Kenny Lamb, and recorded in Nashville. The two-minute music video has over a million views and 10,000 Facebook shares.
The station plans to use shorter length versions of the music video to promote its coverage of the Razorbacks.
