The rain may have stopped, the sun might even be out, but the crisis caused by days of historic rainfall last week in parts of South Carolina continues.
Like in areas around Columbia for example.
WIS, Raycom’s NBC affiliate there, has been in continuous live news coverage since Saturday.
“We go on the air at 4 in the morning and we go off at 8 at night,” said Jim Hays, WIS’s marketing director.
“It’s just too dangerous for our news crews to be out after dark.”
Yesterday, the station teamed up with radio group Alpha Media to host a Red Cross Disaster Relief Telethon which raised more than $500,000, according to Hays.
“As a broadcaster it is our duty to not only give out life-saving information during disasters,” added Lyle Schulze, WIS’s general manager,” we need to help those who are suffering. The damage is to our viewing area is hard to watch.”
This morning, I went to the station’s website and watched part of its news coverage as it streamed online. Many areas are still in flood watch. Many neighborhoods are cut off as more than 100 bridges are out and more than 200 roads are closed.
The site is a wealth of important and critical information, emergency contact information, closure and delays, road closures and what resources are available to name a few.
There are many touching and heart-breaking news stories on the site and the still images capture the power and destructive force that flood waters can inflict.
