It’s a cold winter in the Dakotas. The coldest temperature ever for Sioux Falls was -42F.
Now imagine your children waiting for the school bus at dawn in weather like that?
Or having to work outside in that kind of cold.
People die from exposure in weather like that.
In fact, it was the death from exposure of a homeless woman that inspired KELO, Media General’s CBS affiliate in Sioux Falls, S.D., to collect coats and warm clothing to donate to those in need in Operation KEEP KELOLAND Warm.
KELO serves the largest viewing area of any station in the United States. Under its KELOLAND TV brand, it owns and operates television stations, websites and mobile news applications that serve portions of South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska.
At four locations over three days, KELOLAND TV and Lewis Drug collected and distributed thousands of coats for needy individuals.
Anyone that needed a warm coat or other winter clothing could choose from a variety of donated coats, hats, gloves and scarves. More than 300 people stopped by each event.
An estimated 4,000 to 5,000 coats were donated and given away along with gloves, mittens, boots, hats and scarves.
“People hand knit things, they brought in crochet mittens that they’ve personally made to give the people in need which I think is really beautiful that somebody spent hours and hours a day to make something for someone they’ll never meet,” said Nikki Griffin, Lewis Drug’s corporate vice president.
