This past Tuesday, the city of Boston stopped to remember the tragic events of the 2013 Boston Marathon. This coming Monday morning, the city will hold the 2014 Boston Marathon. Here is some work surrounding those two events from WBZ, the CBS affiliate in Boston.
The words here belong to Peter Masucci, WBZ’s creative services director:
“On April 15, we had a full Day of Remembrance commemorating the anniversary. It was an emotional day and finding the right tone was extremely important.”
“This idea was generated out of our newsroom. Every time we interviewed a survivor, a city leader, an elite marathoner, etc. during the course of our reporting, we had them deliver a line from President Obama’s powerful speech during the memorial event a year ago. It really was representative of the community coming together as they deliver the singular message.”
“A couple months ago, we put together a spot asking people to submit online ‘why they will run.’ The response was incredible. While initially we put this together solely as an online experience, the stories were so unbelievably inspiring and emotional that we wanted to put the faces and voices to their words. With the Marathon fast approaching, we invited anyone who had submitted to come to our studios and share their story on camera. Through the course of 14 hours on one day, we hosted over 80 runners all sharing their personal, engaging reasons for running. It was one of the most incredible moments working at the station; to be able to meet and share in their stories of triumph, redemption and charities. It was a powerful reminder of what the Boston Marathon means and a comfort to know there are so many great people in our community.”
