With the 2014 Winter Olympics behind us, and hopefully, the 2014 winter as well, here’s a question for you. Which NBC station in the U.S. garnered the highest primetime ratings and shares for the Olympics?
You’re thinking it’s got to be one of the northern cities like Detroit, Minneapolis, Boston, Chicago, maybe Buffalo, N.Y., right? All good guesses, but all wrong.
Try KTVM in Butte-Bozeman and KECI in Missoula, Mont. Both were No.1 and No.2, respectively, among all NBC affiliates in primetime ratings in both adults 25-54 and adults 18-49.
“Certainly, winter sports are of high interest in these two markets,” said Dick Reingold, VP and general manager of NBC Montana, Bonten Media’s TV stations there.
“What I find interesting is that if one of our stations scored well and the other one was back in the pack that would be nice. But to have both of our stations lead every other NBC affiliate seems more than a fluke.”
Reingold said the stations aired promos saluting the Montana athletes going to the Olympic Games to create an emotional connection with them and the viewers.

The stations also committed to airing at least one Olympic story in every newscast.
“I think you can see that we made this an entire station effort,” Reingold said, “using every platform available, including the walls of our own buildings.”
