I’ll tell you why I love this. Even though the station didn’t have on-air avails to promote these stories, it found a way to do it anyway. The videos are imaginative and make me want to watch.
The other thing I really like about this is that someone in promotions knew about these two stories, saw the merits in them and wouldn’t be denied a chance to promote them. You have to spend time in the newsroom to have that happen.
Of course, the power of using Facebook to recruit viewers is not to be denied.
By the way, Stephanie, can you please send us the links to these stories?
Here’s what Stephanie wrote:
Paul,
I enjoy seeing what other stations are doing this sweeps on your new blog, and I thought I’d share with you a few non-traditional promotions our producers recently made. We had the opportunity to promote two really great stories yesterday, but unfortunately not the on-air avails to do it.
These were both day-of turns, so we had only hours to produce something. We had a great investigative piece in our 6 p.m. news, however we only have a :10 avail at 5:45 to promote to that show. So we created this quick Digital Extra featuring the lengths our reporter went to hold a suspected scammer accountable — then posted it on Facebook a couple hours before the newscast.

Then, a heart-warming, human interest story was decided that day to run in our 10 p.m. news. While we have several 10 p.m. topical avails throughout primetime, we had breaking news of a baby shot and killed that would be the focus of our topicals. So we created a Digital Extra for this 100 Days of Homework story for Facebook.
