WRAL, the Capitol Broadcasting CBS affiliate in Raleigh, N.C., aired special programming and conducted an all-day MEDIAthon for a community movement called HungerFreeNC.
According to the station, one child out of four and one adult in five goes hungry.
WRAL partnered with Radio One Raleigh, an urban-oriented, multimedia company, to raise money for Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, a nonprofit serving seven counties in the area.
“The first step to solving this is educating our viewers and listeners to the crisis we’re in,” said Steven Hammel, WRAL’s VP and general manager.

Last Monday and Thursday, WRAL aired documentaries that revealed the depths of the hunger problem in America, and some innovative solutions used to solve it.
Friday, more than $100,000 was raised for Inter-Faith Food Shuttle during MEDIAthon, a daylong fundraiser on TV, radio, web, and social media.
“This is using the power of local media for good,” said Shelly Leslie, creative director at WRAL.
