WBRZ, the ABC affiliate in Baton Rouge, La., owned by the Manship family, kicked off its Fans’ Choice Awards last Friday, the 19th year the station has conducted the program.
Coaches, players and fans visit the station’s website, WBRZ.com, on Fridays to nominate their choice for high school football athlete of the week. Monday and Tuesday, visitors cast their votes for the weekly finalists online. Then the reveal of the high school athlete of the week is done in WBRZ’s 6 p.m. newscast on Wednesday.
According to a WBRZ spokesperson, the contest generated more than 25,000 visits to the page last year.
“WBRZ considers this annual campaign a success,” says Helen Butts, WBRZ’s marketing coordinator, “because it brings community interaction to our website and social media platforms. We pride ourselves on community involvement, and this is a great way to get our station and our viewers involved with the local high schools. It is a very poplar contest that brings many visits and interactive behavior to our website and Facebook page.”
The WBRZ Fans’ Choice Awards runs from September through November and is sponsored by Neighbors Federal Credit Union and Southern Quality Ford Dealers.
