The Ebola scare in the U.S. is teaching us that the world can indeed be a small place.
It’s clear that illnesses around the globe can infect people anywhere in the world within days.
And that we here in the United State are not immune to any medical crisis, no matter how far away it is.
So when a team of doctors and nurses volunteer to go to Kenya to provide medical care for hundreds of Kenyans, that story takes on added relevance these days.
WDIV, the NBC affiliate in Detroit owned by Graham Media Group (formerly Post-Newsweek), airs an hour-long primetime special tomorrow night at 8, Care & Hope: Proud Detroit Exports, which chronicles the medical team from Detroit to shine a light on how little medical care most people get there.
“An interesting note is that these local doctors and nurses not only volunteer their time,” says Donna Harper from WDIV’s promotion department, “they actually spent their own money to get there. As you can imagine, there was so much more they did that no one will ever know — some are now sponsoring children they met there. It’s a great story.”
Care & Hope: Proud Detroit Exports provides a glimpse into the challenges and obstacles of trying to provide medical care in extremely impoverished conditions. Many of the people they treat have waited years to see a doctor.
“It’s not just about doctors traveling to Kenya,” says Dr. Frank McGeorge, WDIV’s health reporter, “the entire experience reinforced valuable life lessons for me. Without a doubt, viewers will take something personal away from these stories.”
The team of doctors and nurses that works with Kenya Relief are from Henry Ford Health System, University of Michigan Health System, and Beaumont Health System.
