TV stations have been known to get creative to gain visibility in their markets.
In Los Angeles, one station towed a banner above Southern California’s beaches to deliver a literal over-the-air message about its morning news.
A station in New York turned a commuter train into the diner on Seinfeld to promote a new time for the syndicated show.
But as far as I know, only one station has a balloon that rises 400 feet over its skyline like the 6abc ZooBalloon does in Philadelphia.
WPVI, the ABC O&O in Philadelphia, is bringing back its ZooBalloon in the spring of 2015. Many thought last year would be the final season for this iconic feature of the city’s skyline after the balloon suffered irreparable damage due to severe weather last winter.
But after a complex insurance negotiation, the Philadelphia Zoo and WPVI have once again come together to make the return of the 6abc ZooBalloon a reality.
“This is a unique sponsorship opportunity for us” says Mike Monsell, WPVI’s creative services director. “We are longtime supporters of the zoo, and to be associated with such an iconic fixture of the Philadelphia skyline is terrific.”
A brand new balloon will be installed and operational in spring 2015. This popular attraction allows zoo guests to rise above the treetops to enjoy seeing more than 1,300 animals and one-of-a-kind views of the city.
“The 6abc ZooBalloon made its home in the Philadelphia skyline more than a decade ago, and its impact on the zoo experience, the city and its people has since been remarkable,” says Vikram H. Dewan, Philadelphia Zoo president.
