Broadcasters long ago abandoned localism. Localism is a myth.
In a recent blog, Dumb Stuff Said in Washington, D.C, written by Dennis Wharton, EVP of communications at NAB, he writes that these were the sentiments of Wall Street investment analysts and academics expressed during a panel discussion about how over-the-top video delivery may one day put an end to bundled pay TV channels.
I was so dumbfounded by the remarks that I had to look up the word localism, because surely those pundits couldn’t be talking about the same localism that I am when I think of it.
Wharton goes on to characterize the remarks as a whopper that deserves entry into DC’s Hall of Fame of Dumb Stuff Said. And when you think about all the dumb stuff said in Washington D.C., that’s saying something.
The remarks outraged my colleague Phil Kurz as well, writer of a blog on TV tech news for TVNewsCheck called Playout. (Click here to read his story.)
And he needs your help.
Please email him at [email protected] about your station’s efforts at localism. Leave out your local newscasts because the public gets that. Rather, email him about the things your station has done that week to serve your local community.
Every Friday between now and the NAB Show in April, he will recap the submissions of stations about their localism efforts that week.
To make this manageable for him, here’s what he needs:
- Call sign
- City or cities served
- Date(s) of localism effort
- 25-word description of effort
- 25-word description of results
- Name, title and contact information of the person making the submission (for follow-up, not for publication.
- Be sure to put your station’s call letters and “Localism” in the subject line of email.
And while you’re at it, copy me at [email protected]
as I may want to write about it for my column.
