When the morning news is done at WISH Indianapolis these days, the on-air talent hits the road. But they don’t go home. Instead, they drive around the city collecting toys donated by businesses or organizations for those in need.
The WISH Tree’s Tweet for Toys campaign is underway in the Circle City. And that means heavy lifting for the morning news team at WISH. Businesses and organizations tweet their locations to @WISH_TV using the hashtag #TweetForToys, and the morning news team makes the pick-up, live streaming the event as it happens. Viewers can drop off toys at locations all across the city. And Indianapolis Colts fans can bring a toy to the game on Dec. 14.
The program benefits the Salvation Army’s Toy Shop.
“The thing that’s so great about Tweet For Toys is that we’re able to see the entire giving process, full-circle,” says Lauren Lowrey, WISH morning anchor.
“We see the toys at the point of donation and collection — through Tweet for Toys — all the way through to the point that they’re picked up by working families around Central Indiana. We get to go one-on-one with a mom or dad around this giant convention hall at the state fairgrounds to help them pick up toys for each of their children. These are working families who are trying desperately to make Christmas special for their kids — and we get to make it special by picking up the toys, getting them to the toy shop, then helping families choose them. The only part we don’t see is the happy faces Christmas morning, but we can imagine it, nonetheless!
“Something that happened this year that has never happened before was we had employees at one of the 15 businesses we stopped at say ‘can we do more with these toys? Can we be a part of the Toy Shop?’ We helped the Salvation Army recruit three employees at this business. It’s exciting! This is such a generous community and it’s amazing how quickly people step in to help.”
