On Dec. 20, this Saturday night, a new college bowl game will premiere on ESPN from Montgomery, Ala.
The Raycom Media Camellia Bowl will pit a team from the Sun Belt Conference against one from the Mid-American Conference. In this year’s inaugural game, the team’s playing are South Alabama University from Mobile, Ala., representing the Sun Belt conference vs. Bowling Green State University from Bowling Green, Ohio, representing the Mid-American Conference.
So why is a broadcast company like Raycom Media involved in a college bowl game in Montgomery?
For starters, Raycom Media is headquartered in Montgomery.
And according to Susana Schuler, Raycom’s SVP, this is more to showcase the city and the entire River Region, as the area is known.
“Our slogan for the game is ‘History Happens Here’,” says Schuler.
“This game is the beginning of a new history of excellent sports competition in Montgomery.”
Raycom plans to use the game as a platform to create awareness about the company.
“Raycom Media will be running recruiting ads to expose a national audience to our great company,” Schuler says.
“We are also running some ads for the state of Alabama as part of our ongoing partnership with the Retirement Systems of Alabama.”
The game also directly benefits markets where Raycom owns stations like Toledo, home of Bowling Green. Raycom owns WTOL, the CBS affiliate and provide services to the Fox affiliate there, WUPW.
“So that’s a win for us, too,” says Schuler.
“We are doing contests for viewers in Alabama and northern Ohio to attend. We also are sponsoring a half-time contest with the Space and Rocket Center based in Huntsville, Ala., that will let six children across the state compete for the chance to win three scholarships to the Center’s annual Space Camp for kids.”
