If you’re a regular reader of this column every day, (and really, why wouldn’t you be?), you know that I believe that something interesting is happening in the world of television news every day. And I’m constantly asking for you to share those stories.
Take for instance this story. An atomic bomb is detonated in Mississippi during the Cold War, the only time an atomic bomb has been tested east of the Mississippi.
So it was Joe Smiley’s job as the marketing producer at the Media General CBS affiliate in Jackson, Miss., WJTV, to come up with the creative to tease that story.
Here’s Joe:
Recently I received a message from you over LinkedIn asking for folks to reach out and let you know what’s happening on “the front lines of television.” Well, I have something you just might be interested in.
It’s a promo I worked on last year, a promo for a story about the little-known history of nuclear testing in Mississippi at the height of the Cold War. I wanted something eye-catching, something different and something evocative of the era. (Also, I wanted something with a lighthearted sense of humor; the idea of a story about nuclear testing might sound somber, but it wasn’t. The piece was an installment in our station’s weekly “Mystery Monday” segment, and the reporter who hosts that franchise always shoots and presents his stories with a quirky sensibility.)
The promo was a hit and helped our station win a CBS Eye on Excellence award, an honor given to only three other affiliates in the country!
I hope you enjoy it and would be honored to see if featured in your column.
Joe
The promo worked. I was so intrigued that I went to WJTV’s website and found the story.
Keep ’em coming.
