In Rochester, N.Y., WROC revealed that teachers under investigation for misconduct are sent to the so-called “rubber room.” While there, teachers collected their salary but were given no work assignments.
I promised that I would keep you updated on any developments in this story from the Nexstar-owned CBS affiliate, and here are a few.
First, many viewers went to the station’s Facebook page to express their outrage. Here are just a few examples.
Talk about bullying!!!
This is crazy!
This is for real?
Truly shocking. The craziest thing I’ve heard in a long while. And these administrators deal with children.
And then the president of the Rochester City School District Board of Education, Van White, appeared with WROC reporter Rachel Barnhart to ask his own questions about the report that aired last week.
“Why are teachers being sent there? What’s the accusation? What’s the process for being sent there? It’s disturbing to me someone is saying they didn’t even know why they’re being put there.”
White will ask the superintendent for a report on the rubber room.
“I get the notion that you would want someone to earn their paycheck. I cannot imagine there is not work available for those people to do other than working directly with children, if that’s the concern … they’re just being asked to sit there and twiddle their thumbs and get manicures, then that’s not a productive and effective use of their time,” said White.
“And I might also mention these folks are innocent until proven guilty and at the very least they are owed a level of respect and professionalism that is owed to all of our staff members,” he added.
