Marie Holmes hit the jackpot, literally.
She had one of the three winning tickets in the Feb. 11 Powerball Jackpot of $564 million.
The North Carolina woman chose to receive the lump sum payout of $188 million, which, after taxes, is worth approximately $127 million.
And Janae Frazier hit the jackpot, of sorts, as well.
Frazier, a reporter at WECT, Raycom Media’s NBC affiliate in Wilmington, N.C., got the first exclusive interview with Holmes at her house.
“It was a group effort,” says Frazier, citing the fact that one of the reporters in the WECT newsroom got a tip about Holmes.
According to Frazier, when the news director asked who wanted to go do the interview, she said, “I’ll go.”
Frazier says she interviewed Holmes even though Holmes at the time had not yet produced the winning ticket.
“I kept thinking, is this for real?” Frazier says.
Holmes, 26, has four children, one of whom has cerebral palsy, according to Frazier.
“It’s a blessing to see someone struggling win. It’s truly amazing.”
Frazier, a Connecticut native, started at WECT as a producer in 2013 and added reporting to her responsibilities last year.
“I’m happy for her,” says Frazier.
